Laugh yourself slim

“I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it’s the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It’s probably the most important thing in a person.”Audrey Hepburn

Did you know that a hearty, gut-busting laugh actually helps you lose weight? Now before you break out in a full on Comedy Central marathon or dust off the old Katt Williams DVDs, and expect to lose 10lbs in front of the TV, let me explain…

Laugh out Loud

According to the International Journal of Obesity, laughter increases the amount of oxygen in the blood, reduces muscle tension, exercises the heart, produces happy endorphins, and, for the undercover calorie counters, thanks to the extra movement and increased heart rate, it burns about 10-40 calories per 15 minutes of genuine laughter. Yea, yea, yea, I know- 10-40 calories isn’t a lot- but as with most things regarding weight loss, it’s about the small steps.

This small step does a whole heck of a lot more than burn a few measly calories. Laughter is good for the soul. It, like kindness, has a language of its own and transcends cultures, languages, backgrounds, education levels and socio-economic status. It connects us with other human beings. It breaks the ice, eases a bad day (much better than a calorie rich cocktail) and is the perfect soundtrack for a night out with friends. Besides, we take ourselves way too seriously these days. So go ahead and find something to laugh at or even better- find someone to laugh with.
